Antarctic wildlife
The wildlife of Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic islands survives in extreme conditions. Penguins are iconic of this region. The birds and mammals spend most of their life at sea but come ashore to breed. This gallery includes a small selection of my images from the region.
This title has already been applied to the film documenting the life of Emperor Penguins. I make no apology for using it again.
It was snowing hard in early summer on Cuverville Island on the Antarctic Peninsula. Gentoo Penguins were beginning to come ashore in large numbers to establish their nesting sites at the beginning of the breeding season. They are plump and well fed ready for the rigours of the breeding season.
