Antarctic wildlife
The wildlife of Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic islands survives in extreme conditions. Penguins are iconic of this region. The birds and mammals spend most of their life at sea but come ashore to breed. This gallery includes a small selection of my images from the region.
Snow Petrels are beautiful white birds of the Antarctic ice. I wanted to capture an image that showed the bird in all its beauty but also in its environment of ice and ocean.
Heading south from South Georgia in the Southern Ocean it was blowing a gale and there were a lot of tabular icebergs drifting north from the Weddell Sea. This lone Snow Petrel swooped below an enormous tabular berg just as a wave broke.
