Antarctic wildlife
The wildlife of Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic islands survives in extreme conditions. Penguins are iconic of this region. The birds and mammals spend most of their life at sea but come ashore to breed. This gallery includes a small selection of my images from the region.
The Wandering Albatross is the largest of the Great Albatross with a wingspan of up to 3.5 m. Over the ocean they glide close to the water seldom flapping their wings. They only come to land to breed on sub-Antarctic islands including South Georgia. Here a Wandering Albatross is approaching its nest on Prion Island in the Bay of Isles on South Georgia.
