Antarctic wildlife
The wildlife of Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic islands survives in extreme conditions. Penguins are iconic of this region. The birds and mammals spend most of their life at sea but come ashore to breed. This gallery includes a small selection of my images from the region.
The Giant Petrel is a predator and scavenger found patrolling the Southern Ocean also occurs around breeding colonies of penguins and seals in the Antarctic. The birds will be found, like this one, sitting quietly on beaches but always keeping a careful watch for opportunities for food.
