Entering Whalers Bay inside the caldera of Deception Island is always full of surprises. On this occasion a recent sprinkling of snow had turned the scene into black and white, the black volcanic ash protruding through the snow.

In the foreground is the remains of the British Antarctic Survey base that was abandoned some 40 years ago after one of the most recent volcanic eruptions.
